DIY Option

If you prefer a budget‑friendly or fully custom approach, open‑frame heaps are incredibly easy to build yourself. A few popular DIY options include:

  • Chicken wire + stakes: Wrap chicken wire into a circle or square and secure it with wooden stakes or metal rods. It’s quick, breathable, and easy to resize.
  • Wooden pallets: Stand four pallets upright and tie or screw them together to create a sturdy, rustic frame.
  • Logs or branches: Use thicker branches or trimmed limbs to form a simple, natural boundary that slowly decomposes over time.
  • Hazel or willow weaving: Create a woven panel structure using flexible branches for a beautiful, traditional look.

These DIY frames are perfect if you want something affordable, adaptable, and made from materials you may already have in the garden.
