Boston Library of Things

Borrow more. Buy less. Build community.

The Boston Library of Things is a new community‑run project that will make it easier, cheaper, and more sustainable for local residents to borrow useful items instead of buying them.

From DIY tools to gardening equipment, camping gear to kitchen appliances, the Library of Things will give people access to the things they need — without the cost, clutter, or waste.

We’re building this for Boston, with Boston. Your ideas, your needs, and your support will shape what it becomes.

Why Boston Needs a Library of Things

Across the UK, the Library of Things movement has grown rapidly, with more than 100 locations now operating or in development. These projects have shown how powerful shared borrowing can be for local communities. In London, the original Library of Things has expanded from a single pilot site into a network that has helped tens of thousands of people borrow tools, household items and event equipment at a fraction of the cost of buying. Members have saved money, reduced waste and gained confidence through learning new skills.

Other towns and villages have seen similar success. Community‑run Libraries of Things in places like Frome, Totnes, Cardiff, Stirling and Belfast have become trusted hubs where people can borrow what they need, meet others, and take part in repair, reuse and skill‑sharing activities. Many have partnered with councils, libraries, Men’s Sheds, repair cafés and local businesses, showing how flexible and collaborative the model can be. These projects consistently report reduced waste, stronger community connections and increased access to practical items that people might otherwise struggle to afford.

These examples show what’s possible when a community chooses to share resources instead of buying individually. A Library of Things helps people save money, reduces clutter and consumption, and creates a more sustainable, connected way of living.

Boston has the same potential. With strong community spirit, active local groups and a growing interest in sustainability, a Library of Things can become a practical, affordable and inspiring resource for everyone in the borough.

💚

🚮 Reduce Waste

Sharing resources means fewer items going to landfill and fewer new products being manufactured.

🪙 Save Money

Borrowing instead of buying helps households stretch their budgets, especially for items used only a few times a year.

🧱 Build Community

The Library of Things creates connections — neighbours helping neighbours, skills being shared, and a stronger, more resilient local community.

What We’re Working On Right Now

We’re currently:

  • Building our first collection of items
  • Mapping local needs and interests
  • Exploring governance and volunteer roles
  • Developing partnerships with local groups
  • Preparing for early funding applications
  • Gathering community feedback to shape the project

Your input at this stage is incredibly valuable.

💚

📋 Have Your Say — Community Survey

Help us shape the Library of Things by telling us what you’d like to borrow, how you might use the service, and what would make it most useful for your household. Your feedback will guide the first B.LoT collection and ensure the service reflects the needs of people across the borough.

💚

➡️ How You Can Get Involved

💡 Share Your Ideas

Tell us which items you’d love to borrow and what would make the biggest difference to your household. Your suggestions help shape the first B.LoT collection and ensure it reflects what people in Boston actually need

👋 Volunteer

We’ll soon be looking for volunteers to help bring Boston’s Library of Things to life. Roles will include cataloguing items, supporting borrowing sessions, helping with repairs, welcoming visitors, and contributing to community activities. Whether you have practical skills, people skills, or just a bit of time to spare, there will be a place for you.

🤝 Partner With Us

Local groups, councillors, businesses and community organisations all play a vital role in shaping Boston’s Library of Things.

If you’re interested in collaborating, exploring shared goals or supporting the project in any way, we’d love to talk.

📢 Spread the Word

Sharing the project is one of the easiest ways to help B.LoT grow. A few small actions make a big difference:

  • Share the survey so more voices shape what B.LoT becomes.
  • Tell a neighbour or friend who might be interested in borrowing or volunteering.
  • Mention the project to someone who could benefit from access to tools, kitchen kit, or event equipment.

These everyday conversations help the idea travel further and reach people who might not see it online.

💚

⭐ Our Vision

A Boston where everyone has access to the things they need, without financial strain or unnecessary waste — and where community connection is at the heart of everyday life.
The Library of Things is more than a borrowing service. It’s a shared resource, a community hub, and a practical step toward a more sustainable, supportive town.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Library of Things?

A Library of Things is a community‑run space where people can borrow useful items instead of buying them. Think of it like a library — but for tools, equipment, and household items.

A Library of Things will help residents save money, reduce waste, and share resources. Many items are used only a few times a year — borrowing them makes more sense for your wallet and the planet.

We’re still shaping the collection, but common items include:

  • DIY tools
  • Gardening equipment
  • Camping gear
  • Kitchen appliances
  • Event items
  • Cleaning equipment

Your survey responses will help us decide what to prioritise.

We’re exploring a simple, affordable model — likely a small membership fee or low‑cost per‑item borrowing. The aim is to keep it accessible for everyone.

We’re currently exploring venue options in Boston. Your feedback will help us choose a location that’s central, accessible, and convenient.

We’re in the early development stage now — building partnerships, shaping the inventory, and applying for funding. With community support, we hope to open our doors later this year.

Yes — but we’ll be accepting donations later, once we’ve finalised our inventory list and storage space. We’ll share a call‑out when we’re ready.

There are lots of ways to help:

  • Share your ideas in the community survey
  • Volunteer your time or skills
  • Spread the word
  • Partner with us as a local group, councillor, or organisation
